'As Asian Americans, we have to work together to fight for social justice and equality, not only for ourselves, but for all of the people around us,” Daryl Maeda said, a professor of Asian American studies.

LOS ANGELES — The term “Asian American” appears innocuous today. It’s in the name of film festivals, professional organizations, college clubs and an officially recognized heritage month. When the phrase Asian American was created — in 1968, according to activists and academics — it was a radical label of self-determination that indicated a political agenda of equality, anti-racism and anti-imperialism. Asian American was an identity that was chosen, not one that was given.

“If you were to ask most people who are Asian American, ‘Describe your race or ethnicity,’ they would say, ‘I’m Japanese American,’ ‘I’m Thai, Cambodian, Filipino.’ Very few of us would start out by saying, ‘I’m Asian American,’” Daryl Maeda, a professor of Asian-American studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder and author of the book, “Rethinking the Asian American Movement,” said.

Activists and academics trace the origins of the term back to 1968 and University of California, Berkeley students Yuji Ichioka and Emma Gee, who, inspired by the Black Power Movement and the protests against the Vietnam War, founded the Asian American Political Alliance as way to unite Japanese, Chinese and Filipino American students on campus.

Lol

This is a bunch of fake ness. At present, these Asian Americans set up shop/ businesses in African American neighborhoods and won't even hire them to work. Blacks should boycott and not buy ANYTHING from them.

Asians monopolize academia admissions, especially the Ivy League .

As an American Jew , we all have to work together to educate and learn about each other’s culture ....learn about how we r alike ....learn about our differences .....but through it all , RESPECT each other’s values and beliefs 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Just open mind to learn to know each other.

Victimologist: 'We need to stop dividing ourselves by groups, such as x country or y country Americans.' Me: 'So we should just call ourselves Americans, right?' Victimologist: 'Oh no, don't back up that far. I'd be out of a job'

Many of my Asian-American friends are Filipino, Japanese, Thai. Los Angeles has a large Asian-American population.

We thank our Asian Brothers and Sisters, but we Black people must do it for ourselves. The need for self-sufficiency is displayed in the lack of political will for change.

Sometimes it’s easy to blame others for our own shortcomings. Everyone needs to be a team player, and stop polarizing.

Should probably do something about college admission discrimination.

Asian Americans saw who ransacked their businesses, limited their children's chance to get into colleges even they have higher scores. Asian Americans are more the victim of Democrat policy than Republican.

Some Asians are good at dancing. (I am one of them.)

I’m Asian American. I don’t want or need people who look like me to convince me that I’m part of an oppressed minority. Asians never have been nor ever will be a bunch of pansy asses cry babies. I’m doing just fine thank you.

Yea, no. The term 'Americans' exemplifies assimilation which is, after all, the goal of this kooky little experiment. When we hyphenate our national identity, we lose our national identity.🇺🇸1

If he's so concerned about other people, why is this Asian man studying Asian American studies? It sounds like he favors his own group. Maybe he's just trying to guilt trip other groups into favoring his group too.
