, Anderson Flen said similar ceremonies have been used in the past to pay tribute to ancestors’ strength in surviving the Middle Passage of the slave trade, slavery itself, the Jim Crow era and other marginalization and persecution. The event planned for Saturday will “acknowledge and replicate” the earlier ceremony.
According to information distributed by organizers, the event is “a collaboration between the Mobile County Training School Alumni Association, the Clean Healthy Educated, Safe, Sustainable group, the Churches of Africatown, the African American Redress Network , the International Center for Transitional Justice , the Department of Landscape Architecture at Mississippi State University, the Southern Environmental Center at Birmingham-Southern College, Mobile County and the City of Mobile.
It will take place from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19. “All schools and churches in the Mobile community, particularly Historic Black Churches, are invited to join in this community-led celebration,” according to promotional information.3 p.m.: Program Begins – Mobile County Training School bell will ring; songs will be sung as ancestors’ names are called out3:35 p.m.: Walkers pass First Hopewell Baptist Church4 p.m.
Flen wrote that the Africatown community’s ancestors had faced serious challenges and persistent injustice. “And yet, God provided our people gifts of forgiveness and love to rise above all these setbacks,” he wrote. “They were provided wisdom, a positive energy of determination, hope, grace, and healing for a better tomorrow. Our elders applied these gifts to the head, heart and hand of a younger generation to make their lives better.
