Fears of Taliban violence and an Afghan voter base weary of past fraud-marred elections are clouding President Ashraf Ghani’s bid for a second term

KABUL—The two items that topped Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s political wish list for 2019 were ensuring the U.S. didn’t push him aside in the country’s peace process and winning another five-year term in office.

This month, President Trump fulfilled Mr. Ghani’s first wish, tweeting a halt to Washington’s negotiations with the Taliban. On Saturday, he hopes Afghan voters will grant him the second.
