DOTHAN, Ala. - The Alabama Department of Public Health took to social media Monday, reminding residents to keep safety in mind during upcoming Fourth of July festivities.
In a Facebook post, the ADPH recommended “leaving the fireworks shows to the experts.” However, the department said that if the temptation to break out the bottle rockets becomes too great, there are some easy tips toAccording to the ADPH, the safest way to enjoy a fireworks display is at a community-sanctioned, licensed event. When outside of community events, the first thing revelers should be aware of is the legality of fireworks in the area.
When setting off fireworks outside of a sanctioned environment, the ADPH offers important safety advice:Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcoholDiscuss safety procedures with children, including teaching them “stop, drop and roll”Never aim or throw fireworks at another person Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves and other flammable materialsNever try to relight or pick up fireworks that have not fully functionedFor the disposal of unused or misfired “duds,” the ADPH also has safety tips:Wrap the soaked fireworks in plastic wrap or plastic bags to keep them from drying outMore information on fireworks disposal is available at local fire stations and landfills.
