Stephen Akard, acting State Department inspector general since the ouster of his predecessor, has resigned. He faced criticism from congressional Democrats.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he asked President Trump to fire Steve Linick, the inspector general who was investigating an $8 billion arms deal and Pompeo’s use of a political appointee. Pompeo denied the firing was retaliatory.
