ABN Amro's wallet app shutdown may point to mobile payments app consolidation as more firms drop out of the crowded mobile payments market:

Banks and other digital wallet players may be having trouble driving adoption because these users might be drawn to more universal wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay, which offer a wide array of features and could be better known.

In turn, firms like ABN Amro and Chase might choose to pivot their resources toward promoting partnerships with top wallets as a way of keeping their cards top-of-wallet, rather than investing in building their own products that aren't getting off the ground. This would benefit top wallets because it both removes competition and pushes more consumers to use their services.

This consolidation could ultimately mean that new regulations aimed at forcing Apple Pay to open iOS devices' mobile payments technology to a broader set of providers won't do much to the wallet's dominance. New rules could even the playing field for third-party digital wallets operating on iOS devices.
