Abbott Elementary star Quinta Brunson becomes Oprah Winfrey in a new image from Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Musical luminaries like Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury and Elton John have all received the musical biopic treatment in recent years. Now it’s parody master Weird Al Yankovic’s turn to have his story told on the big screen.
Yankovic may indeed have started out as a cult figure releasing his goofy song parodies on the legendary Dr. Demento radio show. But later he became a musical star in his own right, releasing a series of legitimate hits throughout the 1980s, including titles like “Eat It” and “Like a Surgeon.” Yankovic then made the leap to movies with his beloved 1989 comedy film UHF.
Brunson is indeed just the latest Weird: The Al Yankovic Story cast member to be revealed. Back in March, it was let out that Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood was in the film as Madonna, and later Wood’s skill at impersonating the Material Girl was teased during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’s cast also includes Rainn Wilson as the aforementioned Dr. Demento and Julianne Nicholson and Toby Huss as Yankovic’s parents.
Winfrey might in fact seem like a somewhat random person to be showing up in a movie about Yankovic. But the talk show host was of course a huge pop culture figure in the 1980s, just like Yankovic himself, not to mention Madonna. The reveal of Brunson as Winfrey on the heels of Wood being revealed as Madonna indeed only makes one wonder what other random 1980s pop culture figures might show up in fictional form alongside Radcliffe’s Yankovic.
