I thought about social media, which I know you have a lot of views on. When you look at social media activism in 2020, does it fill you with cynicism or do you think—well, this is what protest looks like now and good on 'em?
We’ve seen plenty of examples of social media being used in positive ways when it comes to social and political activism. From the Arab Spring to all the marches—from the Women’s March to...well, I imagine the streets of Louisville are filled right now? We’ve seen social media do that. But we also know that social media can be an incredible force-multiplier for bad information.
As far as the idea of performative protest, I want to know how many people that inspires, how many people that persuades—versus how powerful a weapon it can be to the opposition. Trump tried to convince people that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the leader of the Democratic party when she hadn’t been in Congress for a full term yet—that kind of thing. And my opinions on this stuff will change after the election, but right now I am just about one thing.
