The A’s are still uncertain when Frankie Montas will return to the mound.

After receiving a cortisone injection on Wednesday to help nurse his throwing arm, the next step for right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas is to start playing catch, A’s manager Mark Kotsay said.

“There’s no guarantee in that,” Kotsay said. “Until we see him play catch, we won’t have a timeline we can put on him, outside of the fact that there’s optimism that he’ll be able to get on the mound and maybe just miss one start.” Filling in for Montas will be left-handed pitcher Zach Logue, who was acquired in the trade that sent Matt Chapman to Oakland. Logue, 26, was in the A’s clubhouse on Friday. He posted a 5.47 ERA in his six starts for Oakland this season before being sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas on May 29, where he went on to make six starts with a 5.03 ERA. He’ll face Houston’s Framber Valdez.Kotsay said closer Dany Jiménez and infielder Jonah Bride are taking steps in the right direction.
