He understands very well the pull of that Grey Cup, because even now, with his 80th birthday passed, he still thinks about moments from that 29-14 win over the Ottawa Rough Riders.
He remembers those long touchdowns vividly: On the first, he figured Ottawa quarterback Russ Jackson was going to run, “thought instead of reacted,” and Tucker ran past him for a 61-yard touchdown catch. “It is what it is — the guys you’re playing with, you can’t hide that. They all know. There’s no sense in saying, ‘Oh, it wasn’t my fault.’ I should have done better. And that’s the way it is. If there wasn’t a mistake in a football game, there would be no scoring at all. A missed tackle, a bad read on a pass play, an interception, a fumble. If there wasn’t those things, I think the game would be pretty boring.
