LYON, France—FIFA president Gianni Infantino called the 2019 World Cup phenomenal, incredible, fantastic, the best Women’s World Cup ever. He added: “There will be a before, and an after, the Women’s World Cup 2019, in terms of women’s football.”
Such success has immediately raised a difficult question for FIFA: With record-setting TV ratings around the world, and a four-time U.S. champion whose players have made an issue of pay equity, how much should the prize money paid to women’s teams be increased?
They won last year too
The women’s game does not generate the revenue the men’s game does, which is why despite already earning a greater share of the revenue (13%) than the men (9%), the pay falls short. FIFA needs to get better sponsors to pay the women what they deserve.
The women should get more than the men. They should have a bonus because they made it to the World Cup the men did not . It is bull not to give women equal pay.
Woman salary up and men salary down
Wait. So you want the women to get only 9% of the revenue they generate (as the men do) instead of 13% of the revenue they generate (as the women do)? Well, alright. Seems harsh to call for a pay cut when they just won Cup, but good on you for your commitment to pay equity.
Not only are they way overdue for a raise, that raise should be retroactive. It is embarrassing that the women have had to settle for a meager portion of what they are worth when they have been outperforming the men in every metric.
If the women want more pay, they should try out for the men's team. Or maybe the men's team should play the women's team to gauge the relative skill levels and base pay on that.
More than what the guys get!
