Town of Penfield leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the Shadow Pines property on Whalen Road.
Penfield, N.Y. — A new era has begun at the Shadow Pines property following years of community input. The Town of Penfield broke ground Wednesday on a new recreation area, which will include pickleball courts, a picnic area, inclusive playgrounds and trails. The town purchased the land on Whalen Road, formerly the home of the Shadow Pines Golf Club, with residential approval following a town-wide referendum in 2018.
Town leaders at the time designated the property for "general municipal use," but several options have since been considered to develop the landscape and held public input sessions."We've revised the size of the project to minimize some of the tree clearing — we're working with the neighbors on that," said Mark Valentine, Penfield's town engineer. "We're happy that we're finally here and seeing things moving along.
