A Florida block party that drew 3,000 people got shut down amid violence, calls of racism

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Central Florida law enforcement are vehemently denying allegations of racism and police brutality after shutting down a central Florida block partyThe event, which was held in the Spring Hill community of DeLand, started Saturday afternoon and lasted through through early the next day.

DeLand police Chief Jason Umberger explained in a joint press conference Monday with Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood that the shutdown of the party had to do with “lawlessness,” not discrimination toward the black community in DeLand. At around 10:30 p.m., a rifle was pointed at a Volusia County sheriff’s deputy, Umberger said. The rifle-pointing started a string of incidents that led to a Volusia sheriff’s deputy struck with a bar stool and another sustaining a leg injury, while a DeLand police officer was hit in the head with a jar as he helped a deputy make an arrest.

“Ninety-five percent of the people out there were probably having a good time but you have 5% who were out there inciting a riot, carrying firearms, selling drugs and destroying the community’s quality of life,” said Chitwood.

FL has the worse unemployment benefits in the country and yet Floridians keep jeopardizing the safe businesses reopening with this stupidity! 🤦‍♀️

Nice headline .... police brutality? The violence was directed toward the police. You really need to be more thoughtful about your headlines and honest. This is why people don’t trust the press.

As someone who read the article, this was not about racism but public safety. An all night memorial of 3,000 people is a no-no during this Pandemic. Regardless of race or religion. And let’s not forget someone from the party aimed a rifle at a deputy sheriff first.

Yet, Governor Cuomo has his State Police ban a gathering of Orthodox Jews in a memorial procession of their fallen Rabbi in his own state and as a result, fines the new Rabbi for doing it . Where's your reporting of that alleged racist behavior?

Meanwhile, DeBlasio is telling Jews they can't gather and shutting down any large jewish body gathering in the streets. Can't say I've seen this mentioned in this publications twitter feed. Interesting how USA Today doesn't seem this behavior might be a bit racist.
