Seton Hal will lose money Monday night by playing on campus. But it could gain some positive publicity and a big win over St. John’s by playing in tiny Walsh Gym on campus

“We knew we wanted to do something that was as fair as possible,” added the school’s senior associate athletic director for development and external operations, “but maybe could give us the best atmosphere possible.”

Seton Hall’s athletic administrators, led by athletic director Bryan Felt, were partially inspired by what Texas did on Nov. 29, when new coach Chris Beard held a non-conference game against Sam Houston State on-campus Gregory Gym, where the Longhorns had not played since 1977. Beard designated it as a students-only game, although select VIPs attended.

Other than family members, fans weren’t permitted at Seton Hall games in 2020-21 until approximately 1,000 were allowed in for the home finale. The next step in making it happen was to try to accommodate as many of their 1,655 student season-ticket holders—a record number for the program, Chen said—as possible. Chen said a website was set up on Jan. 11 at which season-ticket holders who wanted to attend could sign up for a lottery, which lasted a week. All those who applied were accommodated, he said, and then some of the remaining tickets were offered to the rest of the student population.

“It is without a doubt, a big hit financially,” Judge said, “and we’re still figuring out what that’s going to be and what that’s going to look like. It's a six-figure hit. When we can’t play these games at the Pru Center, it’s very tough.”
