Yes. I’m serious. She had stage 3A colon cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes.
“Oh, sorry Doc, I didn’t realize you were just being hilarious when you body-shamed me and dismissed my cancer as a chance to work on my summer body. My bad.”A lot of people are calling this a cautionary tale about gender bias in medicine. Hell, I even recently had a totally bullshit appointment with a manicurist. Anytime a fat body is in need of any type of care, from dip nails to colonoscopies, there’s a chance that shit is going to go sideways.
As someone who has battling a still undiagnosed medical condition there are tons of doctors that don't care out there. I am underweight from not being able to eat & am now on my 7th doctor. So far this is the first one to actually take my seriously. Fingers crossed I get answers
A family friend had a similar experience. At first they said it was her weight. After 4 months she found out she had stage 4 cancer. She died a few months later, leaving behind a husband and three children. The youngest was a toddler.
Yeah. I would have been, need a second opinion and whats your name?
When a so-called 'doctor' starts attributing everything to your weight, ask them to run the tests they would run on a person with a normal BMI. Attributing a problem to one cause without ruling out all other possibilities is the sign of a shitty clinician.
In my early 20s, I had terrible stomach pain for years. I was called a hypochondriac, brushed off. My PCP even told me to 'suck it up, we all get stomach aches'. I finally found a new PCP and within 2 months of seeing her, I was having my gall bladder removed. /1
The key word in that sentence is “he.” Find another (female) doctor.
I have a friend who's doctor told her to basically stop eating regular meals to lose weight. She's a Rockstar and basically told him that was a crap thing to say. Fast forward several years later, her hormones finally get regulated and she drops a lot of weight.
