“A Deeply Shocking, Traumatic Event”: The Academy Forcefully Decries Will Smith

Smith’s behavior fits neatly into what’s described in the standards of conduct, which the Academy sent toin conjunction with its statement announcing a review of the incident. The document lists four main areas of “unacceptable conduct,” one of which is “physical contact that is uninvited and, in the situation, inappropriate.” The Academy also specifies that it’s to take action if the misconduct occurs “in connection with Academy activities,” which of course includes the Oscars.

So you have what appears to be a clear violation of the Academy’s conduct standards occurring at its biggest event of the year. But this situation feels socially murkier than those aforementioned instances of expulsion, or at least more fraught; the decision to allow Smith to stay in the Dolby Theatre and accept his best-actor Oscar says as much.

Yet Vanity Fair treated him like a hero at your After Oscars Party.
