Heading east along the Richmond Greenway Trail, a cyclist can cruise onto the Ohlone Greenway to reach downtown Berkeley, or opt to wind westward to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, which stretches across the water to Marin.

The surrounding neighborhood in District 3 is home to a largely working-class and Latino community, and 80% of the victims of the severe or fatal collisions were people of color. “I usually take the Bay Trail route, which has some scarier sections, but it’s more direct, and I don’t feel like I’m having to wiggle around the sidewalks,” said Warren Wells, a policy and planning director with the Marin County Bicycle Coalition. “It’s something that is discouraging and scary for even experienced riders, and would be even more so for someone trying to experience it the first time.
