“They are one of the worst landlords in our service area.' With over 24,000 homes in mostly lower-income areas, VineBrook Homes has been called out by critics as one of the most aggressive landlords in bringing eviction proceedings against its residents.

In February, Jenike Allen traveled to housing court in Cincinnati to try to stave off eviction from her three-bedroom rental home. Her landlord said she had failed to pay a rent hike it had told her about, and Allen wanted to assure the judge she had never received notice of an increase.

VineBrook Homes was founded in 2007 by Dana Sprong, a Massachusetts real estate developer and Harvard Business School graduate, and his partner Ryan McGarry. The company is one of a growing number of institutional investors buying up single-family homes across the country that they turn into rentals.

After trying to defend against the eviction herself, Allen, a VineBrook tenant since January 2021, sought legal help from Jordan Cotleur, a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Greater Cincinnati. Allen began paying her rent to the court and in June reached a settlement with VineBrook to rescind both the rent increase and the eviction; the settlement was filed with the court and reviewed by NBC News. But that wasn’t the end of Allen’s travails with VineBrook.

“Maintenance requests went unanswered for weeks,” Vaulx said. “At one point there was an infestation of bugs I had to remedy myself because they wouldn’t fix it. The shower broke, the heating was messed up. Only when I put my rent into escrow with the court and withheld payments, that’s when they came and remedied what was wrong.”

One day she arrived home to find a letter taped to her door telling her VineBrook had bought the property and was her new landlord. Although the rent remained the same at first, Jenkins said, VineBrook started adding fees. She got out as soon as she could.

Again here you are NBC spreading hate. There are plenty of jobs out there. Get a job and pay your own rent!! If they are not able to work then they should have to prove it.

Pay up or pack up

Pay your rent or move out, freeloaders.

Pay ya damn rent, freeloading jungle bunnies

Sounds like this company is just taking advantage of Ohios weak rental laws. This company is not to blame, the state legislature is the problem.

Government needs to step in

It's so weird how these problems aren't problems when you pay rent early/on time

You know I've seen all kinds of push for forgiveness from politicians except for property tax forgiveness didn't see that.

Right, cause having more homeless in low-income areas is a good thing...

Just American capitalism doing what it does best- f*****g over poor people.

Sick

You rent, you pay.

Those tenants should have, you know, paid their rents.

Nbc trying to blame capitalism on high prices. Its the democrats fault for letting immigrants in and creating s housing shortage. That’s the media always flipping the truth!

Good

Republican owned company in n a Republican controlled state, what do you expect. They use these people as stats in their BS argument

You mean the residents who don’t pay their rent.

Pay your rent.

All landlords are filthy rich… They should allow residence to stay up to two years for free

Why do so many tenants think they should be able to occupy and enjoy housing for free?

How about pay your rent or GTFO! More democrat voters want the benefits of capitalism without the work!

Corporations buying up the housing is wrong. They have the means to buy easiest than a single family. However if you can buy a business together and expand like that, then you’re a smart businessman. Tenants just need to pay their bills. Taxes go up so increase in rent.

Corporations should not own housing nor hospitals. This is why we are so fucked.

Thank you for calling out predatory VinebrookHomes. Shame on them. 😡

At least include them in your tweet since they refuse to let the public interact with them, kinda like they're trying to hide. VinebrookHomes

Pay your rent, problem solved.

Slumlords

It’s a business. No money, no roof. Don’t like it? Open up your own home to these people. 🤡

It is easy, pay your rent

Ohio considers 'Right to Repair' bill to target manufacturers that make items hard to fixAn Ohio Republican says his proposed law would require manufacturers to share/sell their parts and schematics with consumers and small repair shops. Sir, we can’t fix that we need you to lose your rights and do what we say Part of making things hard to fix is making them hard to reverse engineer. Sounds like a tough line to draw. But after I had to remove a tire to replace a battery, I'm not inclined to side with manufacturers. Car manufacturers doing the same thing.
