The consequences of the exotic species’ arrival have thus far been devastating: three cows died from what experts suspect to be serious blood loss during an out-of-control feeding frenzy on a farm in the Southeast in 2021.

“They are going to spread to pretty much every part of Ohio and they are going to be a long-term management problem. There is no getting rid of them,” said Risa Pesapane, senior author of the paper and an assistant professor of veterinary preventive medicine at Ohio State. The ability to reproduce asexually, with each female laying up to 2,000 eggs at a time and all 2,000 of those female progeny able to do the same, is the secret colonization weapon of Asian longhorned ticks.No other tick species in North America boasts such an ability. Thus, they are uniquely capable of continuing to grow exponentially without being constrained by the need to locate a partner.
