The 1st day of March is one of the benchmarks for the beginning of spring, but a bitter cold snap is on the way

The Climate Prediction Center's forecast odds for above- or below-normal temperatures between March 6 and March 10, 2019.The first day of March is one of the benchmarks for the beginning of spring. Average temperatures steadily grow warmer during the month and the thought of snow falls by the wayside as the promise of comfortable weather settles in. Most things don’t play out ideally, though, and that’s certainly the case this year.

The cold snap will kick off with a significant winter storm rolling across the country this weekend. The snow will start along the eastern slopes of the Rockies on Saturday and Sunday before quickly moving across the center of the country. The system will hook toward the Northeast by the beginning of next week, potentially bringing significant snow to some of the I-95 corridor.

Snow is just the beginning of it. An Arctic cold front behind the snowstorm will allow another burst of bitterly cold temperatures to wash over the United States this weekend and early next week. The latest run of the GFS model suggests that morning low temperatures in the double-digits below zero are possible as far south as Iowa early next week, with daytime high temperatures struggling to climb above freezing across much of the eastern two-thirds of the country outside of the southern states.
