What can you say about Rick Dobbertin’s J2000 that hasn’t already been said? Some people call it the, some call it the car that put a stake in the heart in the Pro Street movement. Maybe those opinions are one and the same.Rick Dobbertin debuted his 1985 Pontiac J2000 at the 1986 Car Craft Street Machine Nationals and set the world on fire. Throngs of people and even a TV news crew flocked to the car, as much a work of art as it was anand Super Cruise, then it disappeared from the scene.
Both cars have been featured many times, and you can find the technical specs on each through a basic Google search. The salient point is this: Both of these cars were built by average people with self-taught skills. Matt and Debbie had been running a business building conversion vans. When the company was looking to expand westward, Matt and Debbie volunteered to relocate to the new location in Chandler, Arizona.
Whether you like the Pro Street look or not, you have to respect the work evident in the best cars of the era. “Look at the J2000. It’s a tube frame made of polished stainless steel. You can’t see any seams at the joints,” marveled Steve. “It looks like it’s molded.” Rick Dobbertin demurs when asked about the J2000. “I don’t know if it’s the. I think there were better cars out there,” he says.
Rick Dobbertin is also a self-taught builder. His first major car was a 1965 Nova that put his name on the map in 1982, collecting the top award at that year’s Street Machine Nationals and being named HOT ROD’s Street Machine of the year. Among a long list of impressive features, the Nova had twin turbochargers feeding into a 6-71-big-block. “Yeah, lots of people told me that wouldn’t work. It’s all about managing airflow, though,” he says.
That Nova set the stage for the J2000, a car that took Rick more than two years and 6,000 hours to build. About the polished chassis, Rick says that came out of necessity. “I’m not the best welder. I didn’t like seeing the stops and starts in the welds, so I decided to grind and polish all the joints,” he says. First, let’s acknowledge that’s he’s probably better with athan he’s letting on. But second, consider the ramifications of that decision.
