Women are launching businesses at 1.5 times the rate of men, but receiving less than 3 percent of funding, said Mary Ann Reilly, SVP and North America Head of Marketing, Visa.

In a survey of US-based female small business owners conducted by Visa, 73 percent reported difficulty in obtaining the funding they needed to start their own business. In fact, six in ten self-funded. Surprisingly, millennial women aren't any different than previous generations. “They were twice as anxious about asking for a raise than their male counterparts,” said Reilly.

At her very first VC meeting, Schneider was told she could start a family or a company, not both. “That lit a fire in me,” said Schneider, who was pregnant with her first child at the time. However, she said it did take a couple years to figure out what balance looked like. In her experience, it’s very unique to the individual. Today, Schneider lives by the rule that you can only balance three things in a given week — for example: work, family, exercise.

Fear of not having full competency often holds women back. However, said Kaye, “a lot of what got me here was not knowing how to do anything.” As someone who likes to be in charge, she said it was challenging to get comfortable asking for help — but crucial to her success. , “You’re going to make mistakes, and people fail all the time, and you’ll learn and you’ll grow, and that never stops. You really don’t need to know everything about everything before you get started.”
