John’s Grill remains the good ol’ place downtown for the people who run the city. Your server will quickly bring sliced sourdough bread to dip in oil and balsamic vinegar. Many of them, such as Milo and Jesus, have worked at the restaurant for years. They’ll make you feel like you are eating at your nonna’s. The homelike vibe is immaculate. Pisoni also noted that everyone from construction workers to Financial District folks patronize the joint. Celebrities are no stranger to its charms either. When you walk into Red’s, photos of the late chef and travel documentarian Anthony Bourdain are prominently displayed on one wall. He once described his experience at Red’s as a “beer for breakfast kind of place.” He wasn’t wrong.

When I moved to San Francisco, I knew I needed to find a coffee shop — a spot that provides a welcoming ambiance and some decent Wi-Fi, which is a surprisingly difficult-to-achieve combination. Caffe Trieste has come to fill that void for me. It's full of the sights and smells that make for a perfect weekday workday, and has become a home away from home on the weekends when I want to bury myself in a book.
