7 things nobody tells you about the San Francisco Bay

Great whites are not the only sharks in the Bay. There are 11 others, including the leopard shark, Pacific angel shark, brown smooth-hound, broadnose sevengill, and soupfin shark. The leopard shark is the most common. It can grow up to six feet long and is named for its gray body and brown spots. The Bay’s top marine predator is the broadnose sevengill shark, which can grow up to 10 feet long and become aggressive if provoked.

Far from the man-eaters portrayed in pop-culture, the sharks of the San Francisco Bay typically feed on mollusks, crustaceans and small fish on the ocean floor. Like all marine animals, sharks face environmental challenges, including pollution, overfishing and dredging. Because sharks are mostly bottom feeders, they consume high levels of toxins, heavy metals and plastics. The greatest danger Bay sharks pose to humans can easily be avoided by one simple act: not eating them.
