Tech companies discourage employees from discussing salary, making it difficult for women to spot pay discrepancies.The easiest way to reduce the gender pay gap is through pay transparency, or an openness about salary information. If employees uncover that they're paid less than their colleagues for the exact same work, chances are they'd demand to be paid more. Yet, a new

of tech employees reveals a majority are discouraged from disclosing their salary data, making the gender gap harder to spot., an anonymous social network for discussing workplace issues, 60% of the 5,149 respondents say that they have been discouraged by their human resources department or management from discussing salary information. And the situation isn't changing much over time.

It's important to note that these employees were only asked if they were discouraged from sharing pay data, but not if they were prohibited from doing so. In California, where many of these tech organizations are headquartered, it's illegal to prohibit employees from disclosing their salary information. In 2015, California Governor Jerry Brown signed the , under which employers cannot prohibit employees from discussing their own wages or the wages of others.
