, desperate to help their children, search for answers about their child’s condition online. But on the internet, they can stumble upon posts about unproven miracle treatments or find misguided information in discussion forums.
But all of this misinformation is unhelpful to parents, and in some cases, it can be downright dangerous. Here, we’ve asked experts to break down some of the most common inaccuracies that are perpetuated online.Autism is a “spectrum” disorder, meaning the symptoms, abilities, disabilities and severity levels vary from person to person.
Still, there’s a public misconception that everyone with autism has limited intellect. “People may base their assumption, for instance, on how well someone speaks or communicates,” says Jessica Brian, a psychologist at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. “But kids with autism can be very smart in some areas and have challenges in other areas, just like any child, though their strengths and weaknesses tend to vary more.
Aspies can be on certain spectrums, it doesnt mean stupid or low function, you have to bring out the best in a aspie and we will preform or excel, I did, because my momma worked w me brought out the best in me academically and normalized me socially w/o using autism as a crutch
I am high functioning adult autustic and tested gifted at 8 years old, was requested to go to PATS program , its for academic tech and gifted advanced children, I have a TBI and still have a high IQ from my last testing, Autism doesnt make you stupid , just function different
No they dont, many if not most are gifted, academically excel and work for fortune 500 companies who employ autistic people, Coke & Pepsi do and a list of companies because of how aspies think & operate its beneficial to business, I have the book that proves that statement
Thank you! As an autistic, I have a normal IQ. Infact. Statistics show that most autistics are average IQ by like 60%. Only 31% are intellectually disabled. So that means that even non-verbal autistics can be normal IQ.
