I got involved with Sunrise in the summer of 2018. I joined the movement initially because I cared about climate change, but I stayed because of the community we built and the relationships.
I lived in Iran until eight years ago, in one of the most polluted cities in the world, Tehran. I couldn’t imagine young people having any power over politics there. But here, we’re changing this dynamic — these strikes are a demonstration of growing youth power. We’re striking as the generation of the Green New Deal. Every single one of us believes in this vision.
We believe in a future where low-income communities and communities of color don’t have to worry about losing their homes to a crisis that’s entirely preventable. We believe in a future where all people have the opportunity to have a good, meaningful job transitioning our food, transportation, and energy systems to be 100% renewable and sustainable. We believe in a future where health care is accessible to all people. It’s all interconnected.
