Big tech is hyping 5G ... but it's still tomorrow's dream

“For three years, we talked about 5G here but followed it with a question mark,” Cisco Systems CEO Chuck Robbins told Barron’s in an interview Tuesday morning. “Last year, we finally got to an exclamation point, and this year is the same.”

A U.S. delegation at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week is trying to dissuade European telecommunication firms from investing in Huawei’s 5G cellular technology, saying it could be"potentially compromised by the Chinese government.” Huawei, meanwhile, is on its own campaign to put those concerns at rest.

The potential payoffs will be superfast applications that jet-boost video streaming and mixed-reality experiences for consumers, as well as upgrades in data processing that transform health care, education, manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, and other industries. Try at least five years, says Dan Hays, a principal consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, who argues that most mobile operators simply don’t have the capital to build something this ambitious. He noted that 5G’s predecessor, 4G, took three to five years.
