Puerto Rico is facing the aftermath of another massive storm — 5 years after Hurricane Maria devastated the island. Now, Fiona's destruction is putting those lessons for the federal government to the test.

Stephanie Rojas/APA road is blocked by a mudslide caused by Hurricane Fiona in Cayey, Puerto Rico, on Sunday.Exactly five years after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, killing at least 3,000 residents and causing the collapse of the island's electricity system, the U.S. territory is again facing the aftermath of aas a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday, hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans were again without electricity.

Anne Bink, the associate administrator of the Office of Response and Recovery at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, says the agency is much better situated to respond to Fiona than it was for Maria. "We have 10 times the food, 10 times the water that we had when Maria struck and made landfall in Puerto Rico," Bink says."And we also have triple the generation support, the temporary power support."

But funding for Puerto Rico has come slowly. In 2020, three years after Maria, the Trump administrationThat work is ongoing and is speeding up," Bink says, adding that FEMA has been"laser focused" on resiliency — hardening the systems against natural disasters, such as hurricanes and earthquakes.

Western (biased) media including NPR support the right of Indian Muslim women to wear hijab but oppose the Iranian govt forcing Iranian women to wear burqa, what a hypocrisy

No one wants to spend the money to be address the problem. These used to be 100 year events- not any longer.

The Democratic Master Race runs Puerto Rico as their own spigot, dumping federal dollars directly into their own pockets. Hundreds of billions of dollars of federal aid has been diverted from their intended development projects.

Lessons like government officials not hiding aid and trying to shake down FEMA ?

Hurricanes actually improve Puerto Rico, it's such a sh**hole

🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

What is the best way to help? 🇵🇷

Damn.

💔💔

Prayers are with Puerto Rico and to the Salvation Army who will be one of the first responders.

these people rely on the help of white people for survival as they can't run a functioning society

It'll help that we don't have a heartless, traitorous moron in the WH anymore.

Maybe with a decent disaster response team, they can build back better. The response teams in 2017 weren’t allowed to improve the infrastructure, even though they wanted to. Would have saved PR a lot of damage and $$$ if that administration had let them upgrade.

bckSpokane Will the orange 🤡 be there throwing paper towels?

The need to build infrastructure to mitigate what their country's climate, etc is... A lot of these disasters are disaster mostly because engineers, builders, govs aren't requiring/educating them to build according to their needs/sustainability, etc.

Five years ago, PR was hit by a Cat5 storm. This week, they can’t handle a Cat1. I think the lesson is that PR needs to fix their own issues themselves.

I listen to NPR, every morning - but the media is ignoring the fact, that most, if not all of the people that desantis lured onto those planes, were ASYLUM SEEKERS, who had Court dates already scheduled. They did NOT 'sneak into the country' - they presented, LEGALLY, for asylum.

They need more paper towels

PR is full of corruption and 'leaders' failed to secure the island with billions that we give them.

Maybe Trumpty Dumpty can go back down and throw some more paper towels at them....
