Prosecutors have charged five former Missouri correctional officers in connection to the death of an inmate at the Jefferson City Correctional Center.

Four were charged with assault in the second degree and felony murder in the second degree: Justin M. Leggins, 34, of Cadet, Missouri; Jacob A. Case, 31, of Desloge, Missouri; and Aaron C. Brown, 24, and Gregory H. Varner, 34, both of Park Hills, Missouri. Bryanne M. Bradshaw, 25, of Jefferson City, Missouri, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the second degree.

A release from Prosecutor W. Locke Thompson stated a Department of Correction Emergency Response Team was sweeping a housing unit at the prison for contraband. Moore was pepper-sprayed twice and then placed in a spit hood, leg wrap, and restraint chair for 30 minutes, officials said. Witnesses said they heard him pleading with the staff, telling them that he could not breathe. The medical examiner ruled that Moore died from positional asphyxiation and called his death a homicide.
