An unusually large earthquake — for Texas — struck western parts of the state this afternoon, with reports of shaking stretching to Austin. The USGS says the quake's magnitude has been upgraded to a 5.4.

The earthquake hit not far from the Texas-New Mexico border, near the town of Pecos, this afternoon.

The magnitude 5.4 quake appears to be one of the largest in Texas history, according to Jonathan Tytell, a geophysicist with the USGS."This was a big event," Tytell said. The epicenter of Wednesday's earthquake was not far from the New Mexico border — about 35 miles northwest of the town of Pecos. The epicenter was close to the same area where a 5.0 earthquake hit in March 2020, Tytell said.Marfa Public Radio's Travis Bubenik said he noticed his monitor shaking around 3:30. He

I think I did? I was at work on the 5th floor of the Dealey center and felt like I was shifting back and forth gently in my chair, it was a really weird feeling & my first thought was earthquake, but we don’t get those here so I figured it was just me. Saw the news much later!

Yes I did feel it. I was on my bed and it was shaking, and my cat felt it too. He looked at me and kept staring to the walls and ceiling and run out of the room. I told my husband and checked Twitter but nothing was said about it at that time. It was 3:36pm when I wrote him.
