Commissioner Gia Biagi revealed that plan — but no details — in a speech to the City Club of Chicago, where she talked about her love of cycling and about the city’s goal to help Chicagoans who may not own a bike or even know how to ride one.
By the end of this year on the West Side alone, the city will have added 45 miles of new bikeways that "fill the gaps" and create a "neighborhood network." Similar projects are underway or planned across the city. "And also, announcing right now, we’re gonna give away 5,000 bikes to Chicago residents. Free bikes. And a helmet. And a bike lock. And it’s not gonna be a Divvy bike," Biagi said, to applause.The bike giveaway will be bankrolled by a "Climate Recovery Bond," said Sue Hofer, Chicago Department of Transportation spokeswoman.

Battery life is a mere 3 hours. Looks like lever 🤣 Far more valuable than lights on a helmet is a folding mirror. Bell did this for years on the Metro and Metropolitan helmets but seem to have abandoned the idea. This is unfortunate. Having a mirror is extremely useful and having it fold out of the way was brilliant.
