49ers’ Shanahan talks up Garoppolo, Lance rehabs as playoffs approach

SANTA CLARA — “The goal,” coach Kyle Shanahan said, remains for Jimmy Garoppolo to be available by the NFC Championship Game or the Super Bowl.

“I think he can put a little weight on it,” Shanahan said Friday, “but he’s not out there running and stuff like that, so it’s a little bit away.” “Once they fixed the break, there was always worry that when you fix the break, will that rub the wrong way or something like that,” Shanahan said. ” They fixed the break great, and then they knew they had to go in and fix that , which he’s known for a while.

Rookie Brock Purdy will make his fifth straight start Sunday when the NFC West-champion 49ers host the Arizona Cardinals in their regular-season finale. The 49ers are currently slotted as the NFC’s No. 2 seed for the playoffs, with a chance to rise to No. 1 with a win and drop to No. 3 with a loss.

David Blough will start for the Cardinals a second straight game; he is their fourth quarterback this season. Kyler Murray had anterior cruciate ligament surgery last week, and Colt McCoy is out with a concussion. Trace McSorley started two weeks ago but couldn’t stop a Cardinals’ losing streak that now stands at six.
