49ers await MRI results on McCaffrey’s injury, give updates on Samuel, Williams

Once the 49ers get a diagnosis on McCaffrey, they can determine whether he can be fitted with protective gear and be given pain medication in order to play or if he will be better served by missing one or more games. McCaffrey, who didn’t miss a game last season with either Carolina or the 49ers and was a workhorse for the first five games of 2023, rushed 11 times for 43 yards Sunday and caught three passes of nine net yards, including a 13-yard touchdown on a shovel pass from Purdy to open the game.

Samuel was the first to depart, playing just nine snaps and rushing two times for 11 yards. He was on the bench before the end of the first quarter and ruled out at halftime, watching the rest of the game from the sidelines. He was injured on an 8-yard run on the first play from scrimmage. “We got in some negative situations where we were second-and-long and third-and-long and with that pass rush and the tight coverages, that makes it really tough on a quarterback,” Shanahan said. “Just getting in those bad situations made Brock’s job a lot tougher.”
