The recall covers inflators on both sides of certain Charger and Chrysler 300 cars from 2018-2021 model years.

Stellantis is recalling nearly 285,000 Dodge and Chrysler sedans, Friday, March 22, 2024, because the side air bag inflators can explode with too much force and hurl metal fragments at drivers and passengers. Stellantis is recalling nearly 318,000 Dodge and Chrysler sedans worldwide because the side airbag inflators can explode with too much force and hurl metal fragments at drivers and passengers.

The automaker says in documents posted Friday by U.S. safety regulators that moisture may get into the inflators due to a manufacturing defect and cause corrosion and cracks. The airbags can inflate even without a crash due to high temperatures in the cabin, the company said. Stellantis has seven warranty claims and customer assistance reports but no reports of injuries, the documents said. Most of the recalled vehicles are in North America.

The inflators are made by Joyson Safety Systems, a company that ended up acquiring Japanese airbag maker Takata after its bankruptcy. Takata used ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate front airbags in a crash. The chemical propellant can deteriorate over time when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. It can explode with too much force, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel.

Recall of Dodge and Chrysler Sedans Due to Airbag Inflator DefectRoughly 285,000 Dodge and Chrysler sedans have been recalled because certain air bag inflators can explode and hurl shrapnel at drivers and passengers. Stellantis, the company that owns Dodge and Chrysler, said the recall involves side air bag inflators on certain models of 2018-2021 Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s. According to Stellantis, a manufacturing defect means moisture may get into the inflators and cause corrosion and cracks. This can cause the airbags to inflate even without a crash if temperatures inside the car get too high. Stellantis investigated five cases in which the airbags inflated while the vehicles were parked when the inside temperature was above 120 degrees. No injuries have been reported. Owners won’t be notified until May 3.
