Here are 3 ways you can lead during (and after) a crisis:

... [+]Crises, whether they are related to terrorism, data breaches or damaging rumors, require everyone to pitch in. You can develop skills that allow your company to be ready before a crisis hits, and you can nurture the skills to support your company during and after an incident. You have the opportunity, no matter what your formal role is, to demonstrate leadership and add value to your organization.

Be flexible, and demonstrate your openness to change. During times of crises, organizations and individuals need to be open to change. That is, a process or a role may have to change or adapt to be able to respond properly. Ask if you can help, and help where assistance is needed.Crises happen quickly, and it is critical to respond quickly. For this reason, adequate planning should be done ahead of time. But not every crisis is the same, so plans have to be tweaked.

Write down what you are going to do before it happens. For instance, write out the people you plan to contact, and note who you have contacted. Make a checklist of the sources you are going to cross-reference. This will help others see that a certain task is being taken care of to avoid duplication. Crises require effective use of resources.

Write down updates to the plan. Adherence to the plan is critical during a crisis, and the best way to ensure everyone understands the plan is if it is in writing. It does not have to be an in-depth research paper. You may not have time for that. Just write down what needs to be understood by everyone.
