The ‘Come Away With Me’ singer honed her chops at Booker T. Washington.

Natalie Weiner|Special ContributorThe roots of one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time lie in Dallas. That fact, little acknowledged by those outside of North Texas, is unexpectedly crucial to a 20th anniversary reissue of the record: Norah Jones’ 2002 debut,The new edition, released Friday on vinyl, CD and digitally, includes a remaster of the original album as well as a bevy of additional tracks left on the cutting-room floor, most of them never before released.

Perhaps the most remarkable artifact included, though, is a souvenir of Jones’ time learning and playing in Dallas-Fort Worth and specifically at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where she transferred after finding that her musical ambitions might stretch beyond the marching band at Grapevine High School.

When Luis Martinez, who spent 32 years teaching instrumental music at the arts magnet school, acquired some recording equipment for students to make demos or audition tapes, one of those who asked him to record was Jones. Accompanying herself on piano, she performed a flawless, evocative rendition of the standard “Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most,” captured by Martinez in one of Booker T.’s band rooms. Her voice is as instantly recognizable as ever.
