Seize the Grey made D. Wayne Lukas the oldest trainer to win the Preakness Stakes and spoiled the Triple Crown chance of Mystik Dan on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Mystik Dan’s defeat means for the sixth year in a row, the Triple Crown will not be on the line at the Belmont Stakes. The most recent 3-year-old runner to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes was Justify in 2018. The colt went on to become the 13th Triple Crown winner at the Belmont. At 88 years old, Lukas saddled the Preakness Stakes winner for the seventh time.
Like Mystik Dan, Seize the Grey also won at Churchill Downs on May 4 – not the Kentucky Derby, of course, but the Pat Day Mile with a nice stretch run. That marked a turnaround in fortune from the colt’s previous outing – a seventh-place showing in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes. The Preakness Stakes went off without the morning-line favorite. At the post-position draw on Monday, Arkansas Derby winner Muth had been established as the favorite at 5-2. But on Wednesday, Muth was scratched from the race because of a fever.
