An analysis of a newly discovered giant ichthyosaur indicates it was over 25 meters and lived during the Late Triassic period. In May 2020, a father and daughter—Justin and Ruby Reynolds—from Braunton, Devon, discovered the fossilized remains of a gigantic jawbone.
“When Ruby and I found the first two pieces, we were very excited as we realized that this was something important and unusual,” Justin Reynolds said. “I was amazed by the find. In 2018, my team studied and described Paul’s giant jawbone and we had hoped that one day another would come to light,” stated Lomax.
Post the extinction event, the ichthyosaurs belonging to the family comprehended as Shastasauridae went extinct. “I was highly impressed that Ruby and Justin correctly identified the discovery as another enormous jawbone from an ichthyosaur,” expressed Lomax.
