From Mary Richards to Midge Maisel, television has long showcased the stories of women striving for independence in a man’s world.
As a popular self-help author, Abby McCarthy seemingly has it all. She loves making new friends and going on adventures all while teaching those around her how to maintain healthy and fulfilling marriages. But things take a turn when Abby splits from her husband and can no longer serve as the country’s cookie-cutter example of a perfect wife. The series follows her as she acclimates to life as a newly single 40 year-old woman and learns to find value in relationships outside of marriage.
Kate and Allie are two childhood friends that couldn’t be more different — Kate is a free spirit, while Allie leans more to the traditional side. Their respective divorces bring them back together in a Greenwich Village apartment as newly minted independent women. Flipping many of the dating tropes of the time on their heads, the series portrays both women in the driver’s seat of their romantic lives. The duo also had an entrepreneurial spirit, opening a catering business in Season 5.
