Breaking: A bipartisan group of senators has announced an outline of a deal to reform gun laws after negotiations sparked by mass shootings in Buffalo and Texas.

"Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America's children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country. Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities," the coalition said in a statement.

"Most importantly, our plan saves lives while also protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans," the senators said in a joint statement."We look forward to earning broad, bipartisan support and passing our commonsense proposal into law." "Obviously, it does not do everything that I think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction, and would be the most significant gun safety legislation to pass Congress in decades," he said in a statement."With bipartisan support, there are no excuses for delay, and no reason why it should not quickly move through the Senate and the House.

The framework, Schumer said, is a"good first step to ending the persistent inaction to the gun violence epidemic that has plagued our country and terrorized our children for far too long."

U.S. TV audience for Jan. 6 hearing reaches 20 million(Reuters) -An estimated 20 million people tuned in to live U.S. television broadcasts of Thursday's hearing by lawmakers probing the 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol, the Nielsen ratings agency said on Friday. The viewership across 12 networks ranked below other political events such as President Biden's State of the Union address, which pulled in 38 million viewers in March, but higher than most congressional hearings. The first televised hearing of the impeachment inquiry into U.S. President Donald Trump, for example, attracted about 14 million viewers on 10 networks in 2019.
