The crash occurred about 11:45 p.m. when an SUV traveling in the eastbound local lanes of I-80 struck a median near milepost 66.6, entered the express lanes and collided with the tractor-trailer, according to New Jersey State Police.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to strike the center concrete median and enter the westbound express lanes of I-80 where it struck a box truck. The box truck then entered the highway’s local lanes and burst into flames. A second SUV then collided with the tractor-trailer, state police said. The driver and passenger of the box truck were killed. State Police said they were still working to confirm their identities.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 63-year-old man from Temple, Texas, and his passenger, a 60-year-old man from Killeen, Texas, were taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, state police said.“The crash remains under investigation,” State Police said in an email. Debris from the crash and the investigation prompted authorities to close the express lanes of I-80 in both directions west of Exit 66.
