The Toms River Police Department said emergency responders were called to the beach entrance near Seaview Road on the barrier island around 4 p.m.
According to police, the young beachgoers were digging in the sand when the hole collapsed around them. Video from the scene shows emergency responders surrounding a backhoe that worked quickly to remove sand.
