How Long Until The Baltimore Bridge Is Rebuilt? White House Says It ‘Will Not Be Quick, Or Easy, Or Cheap’
The remains of two of the six people believed to have been killed in the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore have been recovered from the Patapsco River, officials said Wednesday, one day after a container ship collided into the interstate bridge, causing its sudden destruction. The two bodies were recovered from a red pickup truck submerged in the Patapsco River, Maryland State Police Col. Roland Butler said at a press conference Wednesday.
The bodies, which were found trapped in the truck under 25 feet of water, were identified as those of 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes and Dorlian Castillo Cabrera, a 26-year-old resident from Guatemala. Speaking at the press conference Wednesday, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said response teams have “transitioned from search and rescue to recovery,” adding: “this is not a conclusion, it’s a continuation.”
Butler said crews have “exhausted all search efforts” around the collapse site, adding that divers are “no longer able to safely navigate” around the concrete and debris from the bridge, where he said officials believe the remaining vehicles are trapped, citing sonar scans.Six construction workers had been on top of the Interstate 695 bridge early Tuesday morning fixing potholes on its surface.
