PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio - More than 180 animals struggling in “horrendous living conditions” were rescued by the Portage County Animal Protective League, and donations are desperately needed.Portage APL said there was no food or water inside the home where the cats, dogs, guinea pigs, bunnies, and birds all lived.
Some of the rescued animals were brought to Whispering Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary in Medina County. They all came in malnourished and dehydrated. Smalley says it’ll take at least 3 months for these animals to recover and for the ones in the worst shape it could be even longer. “It’s very fortunate that they’re alive,” Smalley said. “Some of the ones that we got here are hanging on by a thread, but they are alive and we’re working very hard to keep them going.
“The horses are very thin and we’re working on a refeeding program getting them back to where they need to be,” said Smalley. “They’re nutritionally deficient. They were very dehydrated. Three out of the four goats are doing decent. They all have foot scold, hoof rot, loaded with parasites, mange and mites.”
“Several other organizations responded to our pleas for assistance, and we couldn’t be more grateful for such a caring network of friends!” Lowry expressed. “Thank you to Herps Alive, FOCUS Rescue, Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary, Maggie’s Mission, Parrot Hope Rescue, Rescue Village, and Whispering Acres. It really does take a village!”
