We may not know exactly what’s contributing to the racial disparities we’re seeing in COVID-19 cases and deaths, but there are an unfortunate number of likely possibilities: systemic racism, income inequalities, health inequities, barriers to accessing quality medical care, bias in and out of health care settings, and so much more.
“It’s a global trauma we’re experiencing as humans, but for those of us who identify with marginalized populations, what we’re seeing in the media brushes up against intergenerational grief, racial trauma, and the pain of a system that often disregards them,”This is all the more difficult considering that these communities are also historically less likely to have access to quality mental health care for the stressors and traumas caused by these factors.
“Most mental health models don’t consider the breadth of cultural and sexual identity and expression, and it’s yet another space where BIPOC get the implicit message that they don’t belong. The number one thing I hear from my clients on why they left previous providers is that their experiences were not believed or assumptions were made about them due to aspects of their identity,”Right now it’s more crucial than ever that BIPOC folks have access to the quality mental health care they deserve.
