Giant Magellan Telescope to deliver tenfold increase in resolution compared to Hubble Space Telescope, allowing for highly detailed images of celestial objects.

GMT aims to deliver a tenfold increase in resolution compared to the Hubble Space Telescope , allowing for extremely detailed images of celestial objects. The Giant Magellan Telescope Organization and IDOM announced earlier today the enclosure for the Giant Magellan Telescope , which has passed its final design review and is now ready for construction in Chile.

“We’re also incredibly excited to be moving towards the procurement stage, where we will begin soliciting proposals to begin construction.”The telescope will also be equipped with high-resolution images, further enabling detailed studies of celestial objects, exploration of distant exoplanets for signs of life, and observations of the early universe to comprehend the formation and evolution of galaxies.

A 65-meter-tall structure will house the GMT at the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. This location has been chosen for its ideal conditions for astronomical observations because of clear skies, minimal light pollution, and stable atmospheric conditions. “Our team approached the challenge of the Giant Magellan Telescope enclosure knowing that this structure would be responsible for enabling some of the most important scientific discoveries of our lifetimes,” stated IDOM North American President Tom Lorentz.

He explained that during the day, the enclosure would protect the telescope from the sun as well as from inclement weather. On clear nights, the enclosure opens and controls the air motion around the telescope, to prevent shaking of the telescope that would degrade image quality.
