The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, reported an investigation was underway into the shooting of a bald eagle in Cedar City on Feb. 29. The animal ultimately had to be euthanized, authorities stated. Wildlife officials announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the illegal shooting of a bald eagle in Cedar City .
Members of the Center for Biological Diversity released the news Thursday after a bald eagle was reportedly found in the area of 4500 West seemingly shot with a rifle through its wing on Feb. 29. The eagle eventually had to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries.“It’s a tragedy that this majestic bald eagle was senselessly gunned down, and the perpetrator needs to be brought to justice,” said Patrick Donnelly, Great Basin director at the Center.
Officials of the CBD stated that bald eagles are federally protected under the nation's Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Violations carry punishments of a fine up to a $250,000 and two years in federal prison. Anyone with information on the illegal shooting of this eagle has been advised to contact Officer Jeremy Butler of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources at 310-0238.
