After losing her leg as a toddler in a similar mowing accident, Katie Eddington laced up to show her support.

Eddington carried the American flag in honor of Jacob Combs throughout the Nashville 5K, which she finished in 47:52.This race, however, meant a little more than all the others. When Eddington heard Combs’s story, she decided to run the 5K in Nashville with, an organization that encourages runners to carry American flags to the finish line in honor of families who have lost someone too soon.

“It sounded like a good thing to do for someone,” she said. “Especially since I had a similar accident.” Eddington ran with her mother and carried a flag for the 3.1 miles, unfurling it at the end. At the finish line, she met Combs’s mother. “It was really emotional. I ran that race for Jacob and his family,” said Eddington. “I cried at the end.”Though she is usually competitive, Eddington said she didn’t try to PR in this race.

“Lots of people stopped me during the race. They were telling me I was amazing and that I was running good. The flag and his photo on my back made people see that something was different,” she said.
