Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT As some popular movie franchises pile onto their canon with more and more sequels, the risk of completely breaking that canon increases. Upcoming movie sequels and remakes demonstrate that studios' overuse of old IP isn't ending anytime soon. Some legacy sequels act as though they take place within the same timeline as their predecessors, despite obvious continuity errors.

“Pops” tells Sarah about the future before Kyle Reese ever arrives, leading to Sarah and Kyle jumping forward in time to prevent a different Judgment Day in 2017. As a result, none of the previously established canon or worldbuilding rules matter anymore. After having destroyed the canon, Terminator: Dark Fate makes the smart move of not even trying to salvage it and telling a new story that, for the first time, does not focus on preserving the Connor family.

Of course, by now, the continuity is completely ruined when the movies don't make it clear what is actually supposed to have happened within the universe depicted. Things only get more complicated with additional Highlander movies, and the upcoming Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill. In particular, comments that don't fully commit to the reboot being a prequel or a separate story suggest that it will only further muddle the timeline.

On the other hand, Rise of the Beasts breaks from the Michael Bay canon in many ways, again primarily regarding the Autobots' history with planet Earth. However, the problem with the live-action Transformers franchise may not be its continuity, but rather its general quality, receiving poorer reviews over time. The reboots suggest a desire to make the franchise work in one way or another when it does not seem to even be possible.

Oddly, this construct works because the series gradually becomes more ludicrous rather than breaking away from all logic in the span of one movie. Presently, the Fast Saga does not pretend to be anything else than ironically enjoyable entertainment. Meanwhile, the timeline used to confuse audiences because Han’s death, first shown in Tokyo Drift, was apparently in the future when he started showing up in other movies. However, the linear sequence of events has since been cleared up.
